The Ross Group of companies congratulates Alexis Starner and Nathan Parsons as this year’s recipients of the Ross/Cromling Scholarship.

Starner is completing school while working as a nursing assistant. She is a member of Alpha Tau Delta and Ohio Northern University’s Women’s (ONU) Varsity Track and Field. She tutors for multiple subjects and is part of many other extracurriculars including the National Student Nursing Association.

Parsons works full time as a security officer while pursuing his degree. He has a family of three young girls with his fiancé. He achieved Dean’s List every semester except his first.

Starner is projected to graduate from ONU in 2024 with a major in nursing while Parsons attends Lorain County Community College on a pre-law track studying criminal justice.

Alexis is the daughter of Ezra and Rebecca Starner. Ezra works as an operations support team lead at Ross Incineration Services and Rebecca as a nurse at University Hospital Samaritan Medical Center.

Nathan is the son of Dave Parsons and Cheryl Brennon. Dave works as a truck driver for Ross Transportation Services.

The Ross/Cromling Scholarship is awarded each year by the Ross Foundation, Inc. The scholarship fund was created by associates of the Ross Group of companies, which includes Ross Environmental Services, Inc., Ross Incineration Services, Inc. and Ross Transportation Services, Inc. The goal is to provide college funding to children, step-children and grandchildren of the companies’ associates. Funds are generated through associate fundraising and donations. Winners are selected by an outside panel of community leaders.

The Ross Group of companies wishes Alexis and Nathan the best of luck in their future studies. To learn more about the Ross Foundation, visit http://bit.ly/RossFoundationInc.

Explaining ‘Toxic Releases’: Our 2023 Toxic Release Inventory Factsheet

Ross Incineration Services files Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) Reports to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) each year. This is mandatory for facilities involved in manufacturing, mining, power generation, chemical production, hazardous waste management, etc.

These reports identify regulated toxic chemicals we received the previous year, how they were managed at our facility, and where we subsequently shipped any residuals to offsite.

While it may appear that RIS is the “largest polluter” in Lorain County at first glance, you’ll see that is a misnomer. Read our TRI Factsheet here.

The Ross Group of companies in February donated medical kits and other supplies to the Eaton Township Fire Department to use as part of a “Stop the Bleed” campaign with Midview Local Schools.

The campaign aims to train school staff to administer life-saving techniques in emergency situations. Each kit contains a tourniquet, dressings, gloves, compact chest seal, surgical masks and trauma shears. More than 180 kits were ordered.

The company also provided 5-gallon buckets to store the kits. Every classroom district-wide will receive a bucket and kit.

Fire officials trained more than 300 Midview staff members how to properly administer the supplies in a day-long session on Feb. 17.

You can read coverage of the event in the Chronicle-Telegram.

The Stop the Bleed program is administered by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT), which was formed in 1922. Their goal is to improve the care of injured patients before, during and after hospitalization.

The Ross Companies Partner with Lorain County Children Services for Caring Tree Initiative

Every holiday season the Ross Group of companies partners with Lorain County Children Services to buy gifts for at-risk children in the area.

The 2022 holiday season will be no different.

More than 70 children in Lorain County will receive gifts purchased by Ross associates this year. The county provided a wish list for each child as part of the Caring Tree program. Associates fanned out to area malls and toy departments to retrieve the much-desired items. In many cases, associates went above and beyond what was asked.

They returned each present wrapped, ready to be opened.

The agency says the only gifts many of their children will receive this year are gifts provided by the community.  As a public agency, they cannot use taxpayer money on holiday gifts.

If you want to participate, contact Lorain County Children Services at 440-329-5340.

Ross companies participate in Eaton Township’s “Dumpster Days” event

Ross associates volunteered their time on a chilly October day to accept household hazardous waste from the Eaton Township community – a longstanding initiative that saw an increase in participation this year.

Eaton Township’s “Dumpster Days” event was held Oct. 1. Community members were free to use township services to discard trash, debris or unwanted furniture. Ross associates were on hand to accept potentially harmful substances like paint, pool chemicals, motor oil and pesticides. Substances were then disposed of with the proper care.

The Ross companies have participated in the event since 1993 and delivery numbers continue to rebound from the pandemic-level lows. Associates accepted 83 deliveries in 2022 compared to 73 the year before. Delivery numbers are indicative of pre-pandemic levels.

“We’ve participated in Eaton Township’s Dumpster Days for so many years,” said Pat Lawson, Vice President of Corporate Risk and Compliance. “.  We have a great time interacting with our Eaton Township neighbors and doing something beneficial for the community and our environment.”

For the first time ever, The Ross group of companies manned a booth at the Lorain County Fair.

Located in Building 17, associates took turns interacting with the public and getting the word out about job opportunities. A number of candidates have already been contacted! Oh, and we can’t forget about the Plinko board. Kids of all ages had opportunities to win lime green backpacks, personal misters, phone chargers and school supplies.

When we weren’t at the booth, we were buying livestock at the 4-H auction. Among our purchases:

Lamb (Grand Champion) from Rylee Howard (Saddle-Lites 4H Club)

Steer (Reserve Grand Champion) from Lukas Kowalski (Lorain County Steer Club)

Duck (Reserve Grand Champion) from Kyleigh Ryan (Sunset Riders)

Two market chickens from Maddelin Maclean (Desperados 4H Club).

One market chicken from Jason Urig (4-H Homegrowers)

A market rabbit from Daniel Hartung (4-Leaf Clovers 4-H Club)

We also raffled off tractor pull tickets to our employees. You could say it was a busy week.

Time to start planning for next year!

RTS wows at Career Day in Elyria

Career Day at Elyria Community Elementary School was a success despite pop-up showers and sticky humidity.

Eyes lit up Friday morning when Layne Kuhns of Ross Transportation Services pulled his big rig into the school parking lot.  This particular career day focused on vehicles associated with various careers. The goal was to introduce students to new interests by way of exposure to a variety of career types.

Kuhns talked about what it’s like to drive for RTS and haul hazardous waste. Students asked plenty of questions — “Can you live in the truck?” “Are pets allowed inside?” — and jumped at the chance to peek into the cab.

The Elyria Police Department, Fire Department and Coca-Cola were all in attendance as well.

The best part? When students got to honk the horn, of course.

RTS visits the Rising Sun Centers

The warmth of the sun was matched only by the warm smiles on their faces.

Ross Transportation Services recently visited the Rising Sun Centers in Wakeman, OH to show students what it means to work in commercial trucking. They climbed into each cab, honked the horns and even peeked under the hood.

The Rising Sun Center supports people who are developmentally challenged in Erie, Lorain, Medina and Huron Counties. They help them build life skills, continue their education and find employment.

Thanks to drivers Layne Kuhns and Rachel Atwell, along with Logistics Coordinator Rob Algarin, for sharing their expertise!
